New perspectives on dealing with dementia: successful pilot of e-learning and VR video

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve support and understanding for informal caregivers of people with dementia, the Sozialbehörde Hamburg successfully piloted a groundbreaking e-learning and VR video as part of the EU SupportCARE project and in cooperation with the local Alzheimer Society. This project used innovative technology to enable participants to experience the world from the perspective of a person with dementia.

Experiences before and during the event

Before the event, participants completed a special e-learning unit that prepared them for using the VR video. The video, which was shown during the event, gave family caregivers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the experiences of people with dementia. The subsequent debriefing provided space for an in-depth exchange about the experiences made, with both the interactions between the participants and the feedback to the trainers being characterized by great openness and intensity.

Positive feedback and future plans

The feedback on all aspects of the pilot project was extremely positive. Participants reported that the VR video had particularly encouraged them to reflect on their own behavioral patterns and deepen their empathy for those affected. Many expressed the wish that this important perspective should be made accessible to an even wider audience.

Commitment to better care and support

This project underlines our commitment to finding innovative solutions that improve understanding of the challenges and needs of dealing with dementia. We are committed to continuing these initiatives and continuing to create opportunities to improve the quality of life of those affected and their families
