VR experience in Belgium

The primary objective of the immersive session is to enable caregivers to briefly step into the shoes of someone with early-stage dementia through VR-based experiential learning methods. This approach aims to foster greater empathy and understanding of dementia.

In Belgium, several immersive VR sessions were held on different dates: December 7, 2023, March 27, and April 8, 2024. The first two sessions took place at VIVES University of Applied Sciences in the sTimul care-ethical lab. It was observed that the afternoon session attracted more participants than the evening session. The third session was hosted at the Ter Linde residential care center in Gits.

Prior to the session, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire and review an e-learning module on dementia. To create a welcoming and comfortable environment, drinks and light refreshments were provided.

Following the VR experience, participants were invited to introduce themselves and share the emotions that surfaced during the session. Many found the experience highly relatable, with some becoming quite emotional. The facilitators provided space for these emotions, acknowledging and validating them. Participants recognized and resonated with each other’s emotions and actions. The atmosphere was warm, engaging, and respectful, fostering the exchange of valuable insights and tips.

Several participants stressed that everyone, regardless of age, should have this experience, given the prevalence of dementia and the common lack of understanding about its impact on those affected.

After the session, facilitators followed up with participants and provided additional information based on the questions and concerns raised during the experience.
